Happening this week around the county …
Music played quietly in the background as Jen Podos softly gave instructions for each pose in her morning yoga class at The Lotus Center, located at 100 Williams Road in Elkton.
Podos, owner as well as a certified yoga instructor, said her classes are unique.
That “come as you are” philosophy also extends to people of all ages and abilities. On this particular morning the ages of the students varied, with some stretching easily and others going as far as possible to attain the suggested pose.
“This is low-impact,” Podos said, adding some of her students will use blankets, cushions or other items to be comfortable. “We also do some chair yoga.”
At The Lotus Center, other instructors offer Zumba and qigong, a more meditative form of purposeful movement similar to tai chi.
Podos intends a yoga class for men and teens to be added soon.
The goal in Podos’ yoga classes is to focus on deep cleansing breaths.
“In our culture, there are two speeds: on and off. Here we have the relaxed awareness stage,” she explained, adding that, on a daily basis most humans do not take in the full capacity of air that lungs can hold. “With practice, your mind becomes aware of that.”
